Originally built in 1882, the jail had 10 cells plus the attached sheriff house, which was required by Indiana law to have the Sheriff reside next to or in front of the jail. The prison went through two expansions, the first in 1908 and the second in 1928. At its peak the jail could hold 150 prisoners.
